Wysall Christmas Fair - 27th November 2010

Wysall

The Christmas Fair was again a great success even though the weather was against us. The Hall looked lovely with the Christmas tree, decorations and the many and varied stalls.

The event started with carol singing by the children of Costock school which is always a delight and then down to business on the stalls.   Lunch of soup and bread was served and also coffee and mince pies.

Thank you once again to all helpers and to everyone from the village and surrounding areas who attended to make it a good day.

Best wishes and a Happy Christmas to all, Mary Elston.

Wysall Sports Day - 10th July 2010

Once again the Wysall Sports Day took place. This year we were blessed with blistering sunshine.
Thank you to all who turned up and took part. Special thanks to the young adults villagers and friends who helped run the individual stations or acted as leaders.

We had four teams of 3 children this was made up to 5 with some adults wanting to join in the fun.
‘Medals’ were presented to the winning team. This was followed by a Tub O War, and what a war it was.
For everyone attending we were blessed with a huge smile on Poppy’s face as she pulled as hard as she could on the rope.

Thanks also go to Jane Harris for providing the equipment, without which it wouldn’t happen. Not forgetting David Roberts who oversees us with his rattle, whistle and stop watch.

As if this wasn’t enough it was off to the field for a game of rounder’s, lots of shouting, and encouraging for individuals to make it to the next post.

Back to the Village Hall for a well earned drink and hot dogs and burgers. (Thank you to the chefs).

This was a first for the village as we had our very own ‘village camera’ to capture the day. Thanks to the photographers don’t give up the day job.

Wysall Strawberry Fair - 19th June 2010

Strawberry Fair raises £1138.00 for Church Upkeep
Despite decidedly chilly conditions (although no rain!) and a number of other events being held locally on the same day, once again a good time was had by all who attended this year’s Strawberry Fair.

The Fair raised an impressive £1138.00, which will be used for church upkeep.

The organisers expressed a very big thank you to all who helped set up, clean up and man the stalls. The fair is a group effort and couldn't be done without the help of all those who get involved.

Wysall Watercolour Group - Art Exhibition

All the members of Wysall Watercolour Group were delighted with the success of their first Art Exhibition on Saturday 15th May.  The sunny day saw a steady stream of people coming to view paintings from the Group, as well as other local artists, with over 100 framed pictures exhibited, many for sale.

Visitors also enjoyed homemade soup and cakes.  Vivienne Cawson spent the day demonstrating how she paints her beautiful watercolour flower pictures and musical accompaniment came from the guitar duo, "Rainman".  The feedback from visitors was very encouraging and it is hoped that by showcasing their paintings, the Group have made local people more aware of their activities and encouraged new members to join.

If anyone would like more information, please telephone Pat Roberts on 01509 881068.

Wysall Christmas Fair - Saturday 28th November – most successful yet

‘This year's Christmas Fair was the most successful yet. It got off to an excellent start with carol singing from the children of Costock Primary School, which was
delightful. It was gratifying to see so many people attending, attracted by the variety and quality of stalls.

Our thanks go to everyone who made contributions for the raffle, tombola and cake stalls. I would also like to thank the members of the Village Hall Committee whose hard work in the months leading up to the Fair helped to make it go so well.

Village Stocks, Knights on Horseback & Fruity Boys - all at Wysall Strawberry Fair

Village Stocks, Knights on Horseback & Fruity Boys - all at Wysall Strawberry Fair
This year's Wysall Strawberry Fair, a key fundraising event in the village calendar, took place on Saturday June 20th with villagers along with friends & families enjoying an afternoon of competitions, bargains & refreshments.

A day of mixed weather (with neither the downpours of last year nor the recent heat wave conditions) did not dampen the enthusiasm of stallholders and those attending.

Proceeds this year were £2700 raised for Wysall Church.

A range of attractions included raffles, tombola, competitions, splat & rat and stalls including homemade cakes, handbags & plants, a Hog-roast and traditional strawberry cream teas.
Highlights from the day included the appearance of a knight on horseback, local justice administered with the village stocks and popular return of the 'fruity boys' human fruit machine (by all accounts even fruiter this year!)

Event organiser Karen Noble thanked everyone who helped make the event a success, including those assisting with setting up, stall holders on the day and everyone who visited the fair.

Photographs below show visitors and organisers enjoying the Fair.

Correction

vista360 and Wysall & Thorpe in the Glebe Parish Council wish to point out that the Strawberry Fair is, and always has been, organised by the Parochial Church Council as a fundraising event purely for Wysall Church.

1st Wysall Brownies Pack Holiday - 8 - 10 May 2009

Beaumanor Hall, Woodhouse, Leicestershire

Around 4.30p.m. on Friday, 14 Brownies and 4 leaders departed from the Wysall Village Hall for their first Pack Holiday adventure. They spent two days on a "Magic Carpet" ride around the World, visiting Europe, America, Asia, Australasia and the Wysall pack represented Africa.

As part of Keyworth District, they were one of five units attending Beaumanor.

The group enjoyed games, activities, craft and songs from all continents and all returned knowing a little more than they did when they left.

The pack enjoyed pleasant weather and a dry weekend, for the activities and Saturday evening camp fire.

The group returned around 4.30 on Sunday, again arriving at the Wysall Village Hall. Apologies for any chaos caused by the coach and parking and the noise when they returned!

Finally thanks to Elaine Helm, Louise Radford, Penny Mason and Phillippa Chew (Our Snowey Owl who had been dragged back from Southampton for the event) for giving up their weekend.

Biggest-ever Wysall annual Halloween evening(back to top)

Benefiting from its weekend timing this year, the number of participating trick or treaters and spookily-dressed local households ensured this highly popular annual event in the village was the best-supported to date.

The village was taken over by ghosts and ghouls, ensuring the spirits of Halloween were well & truly alive with lots of spooky goings on enjoyed by all those participating.

The family Halloween trick or treaters included witches and ghosts.
Following a face painting children's party in the Village Hall, organised by Karen Noble and Helen Read, the ghostly village walkabout commenced.

Local homes were decorated with pumpkins, spooky lights & music, skulls, skeletons and even tomb-stones.

As ever, despite a few slightly apprehensive looking younger trick or treaters, a great time was had by all. Thanks to all local villagers who supported the event or took part.

Village Hall Reopening - Luncheon Club - Tuesday 2nd September 2008

The Wysall Luncheon Club celebrated the refurbishment of the Village Hall Kitchen at their meeting on Tuesday 2nd September 2008. The occasion was marked by the cutting of a ceremonial ribbon by the oldest resident, Mrs Queenie Bryans.

Cookery Demonstration & Official Opening of the New Kitchen

The newly refurbished Village Hall Kitchen was formally opened by Daniel Jimminson of the Hammer & Pincers restaurant, Wymeswold on Wednesday 3rd September 2008.

The ceremony was held in conjunction with a Cookery Demonstration by Danny, which was attended by over 60 villagers and friends. The evening was a great success and many useful tips were passed on, not least the importance of butter in the culinary arts!

The refurbishment cost in the region of £20,000 and was made possible by grants from Awards for All (National Lottery) and the East Midlands Airport Community Fund; however, we would not have reached our target without the generous support of villagers who contributed through numerous fund-raising events over the last few years.

Summer Showers fail to dampen the spirits at this year's Strawberry Fair

This year's Wysall Strawberry Fair, a key fundraising event in the village calendar, took place on Saturday June 21st with villagers along with friends & families enjoying an afternoon of competitions, bargains & refreshments.

Despite decidedly damp & dreary weather during the setting up of this year's fair, visitor levels and proceeds were even higher than last year with £2200 raised for the upkeep of the church.

The weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of organisers and visitors alike who enjoyed a range of attractions including live musical performances throughout the afternoon, raffles for barrow loads of groceries and wine, tombola, return of the human fruit machine, splat & rat and stalls including homemade cakes, handbags & plants.

Refreshments were also available including a Hog-roast, traditional strawberry cream teas and Pimms.

Event organiser Karen Noble pictured above commented:

'Once again despite the dreary weather on the day of the event we have had a great turnout for the fair and are delighted to have raised £2200 for the upkeep of the church. Our thanks go to everyone who helped organise and run the fair and visitors who supported the event'.

Wysall Village Sports Day 7th June 2008

This was a new venture for the Community and proved to be extremely successful. Although it was grey and overcast in the morning the sun appeared just in time for the start of proceedings.

Thirty three children, divided into 4 teams, took part in Potted Sports. There were 9 stations including Score a Goal, Bean Bag into Hoop, Dribble & Tap, Shoot the Loop and others.

Parents joined the children for two keenly contested Rounders matches. This was followed by a Family Barbecue which sold out very quickly.
A Tug-of-War of mixed teams finished off the day with a flourish.

Thanks are due to Jane Harris who supplied all the sports equipment, Gill Berridge for organising the games and Phil Harris for arranging the Rounders matches. Thanks also go to all the other helpers.

Wysall & Thorpe in the Glebe 'Recognising Volunteering' Awards presented

The local winners of 'Recognising Volunteering' Awards were presented at the recent
Wysall & Thorpe in the Glebe Parish Council AGM meeting.

Recognising that many local residents do a huge amount of work for others, whether it is within the parish or outside and whether it is for individuals or organisations, the Parish Council were keen to recognise just how much volunteering is carried out by the residents of Wysall and Thorpe in the Glebe.

The official recognition scheme is now run annually, with nominations across two categories - volunteering work carried out within the parish and volunteering work carried out outside the parish.

The generosity of you all was wonderful, donating cakes, chocolate for the Tombola, beautiful children's books and toys, and items for the Raffle.

The children had a fantastic time on Nina's stall decorating Easter Egg biscuits and gingerbread people. We must thank Nina for her time and effort making the biscuits, and then giving up her time to be on the stall.

Thanks & farewell for Christmas 2007

With the decorations now finally packed away, a final word of thanks to everyone in the village along with family & friends who made the festive season one to remember.

The annual village Christmas Fair kicked off a busy festive build-up on Saturday 1st December, with raffles, tombolas, crafts and paintings of village landmarks getting Christmas shopping off to a great start. Villagers enjoyed lunchtime treats with friends & families, including a range of homemade soups, and mince pies.

The annual childrens Christmas party took place on 15th December and was held at the village hall.

Over 40 children were entertained by Nigel and his 'Midnight Cruiser Disco'. There was dancing, games and party food for the children and wine for the adults, much fun was had by all.

We were fortunate enough to have a surprise visit from Father Christmas who had taken time away from his busy schedule to meet the children, bringing each one a present.

We would like to thank everyone who came to the party and would also like to extend special thanks to the Wysall Parish Council for their generous donation which enables this event to go ahead.

The annual Carol Service took place at the Parish Church on Sunday 16 December with an enthusiastic congregation joining in carols and traditional Christmas readings. The service started by candlelight and was followed by coffees and mince pies.

Braving one of the coldest nights of the year a group of local children accompanied by parents and other adults enjoyed carol singing around the village on Friday 21st December. Raising £130.00, which was donated to the Dog's Trust and the NSPCC - the carol singing was warmly received by local residents and revellers in The Plough Inn.

Christmas comes early to Wysall

Unlike the summer fair a lovely sunny day greeted the annual Wysall Christmas Fair. Villagers along with friends and family flocked to the village hall to enjoy tombola, grand raffle and stalls including local paintings, crafts, Christmas decorations and other stocking fillers.

Visitors were treated to coffee and mince pies. A range of home made soups including curried parsnip, leek & potato, and carrot & coriander were served.

Ghost, ghouls & another great Halloween night (back to top)

The spirits of Halloween were well & truly alive in the latest Wysall activities for the occasion, with loads of ghostly goings on.

Local properties were decorated with pumpkins, spooky lights & music, skulls & skeletons and the family Halloween-walkers ranged from witches to ghosts.

The evening kicked off with a face painting kiddies party in the Village Hall, organised by Karen Noble and Helen Read, after which the ghostly walkabout continued.

As ever, despite a couple of slightly apprehensive looking children, a great time was had by all. Thanks to all local villagers who supported the event or took part.

Harvest Festival celebrations (back to top)

Following this years' Harvest Festival, the annual Harvest Festival Supper took place on Thursday October 11th in the Parish Church. Once again the event was as enjoyable as ever with guests enjoying an evening of hearty food, fine wine, great entertainment and good company.

Guests tucked into the traditional Shepherd's Pie Supper accompanied by plenty of wine. Entertainment for the evening was provided by 'Well Versed', with a set entitled 'Those were the Days'. This consisted of a number of favourite pop and classic songs from days gone by. These were interspersed with various witty and thoughtful anecdotes, mostly about getting old!

The annual Wysall Strawberry Fair, a key fundraising event in the village calendar, took place on Saturday June 16th with locals & visitors enjoying an afternoon of competitions, bargains & refreshments, all raising proceeds for Wysall Village Hall improvements.

Torrential rain before and during much of the event did not dampen the enthusiasm of organisers and visitors alike who enjoyed a range of attractions including Punch & Judy, raffle, tombola and even a human fruit machine!! Refreshments were also available including a Pimms stall, Hog-roast and traditional strawberry cream teas.

Event organiser Karen Noble commented
'Despite the heavy rain outbursts during the event we have had a great turnout for the fair and are delighted to have raised £2100 for the Wysall Parish Church. Our thanks go to everyone who helped organise and run the fair and visitors who supported the event'.
